The Colonial Cafeteria

Built in 1927, 1504 Franklin was originally a “Roaring Twenties” grand banquet hall named the Colonial Cafeteria. The Colonial was one of California’s first woman-owned businesses, an Oakland landmark, and the largest establishment of its kind in the state. It was operated continuously by its original founder, Sadie Greathead, until the 1950’s, then was converted to office and retail use circa 1970. 1504 Franklin is a 24,650 square foot historic office / retail building in the heart of downtown Oakland. Conversion of this project was a complete renovation, exposing all structural elements and fabricating a design forward reuse. The project was enhanced by working with tenant Comfy installing state of the art energy system and creating a work environment that is marked by Carilli innovation.
